Fat fanciers…

This is not, as the title may suggest and probably disappointingly for some, a post about fetishism. It’s about Gemma Collins and the likes of Gemma Collins. Celebrities of a chunky nature who are courted rightly or wrongly by plus size brands to sell us, the plus size consumer, a product.
Gemma has been in the press again (I don’t think there’s a day she isn’t) and surprise surprise, this week, she doesn’t like being fat (someone has obviously been offered a fitness DVD deal in time for Christmas).
I met her once. She was a bit of a twat if I’m honest.
Gemma, just like every other person on this planet has the right to lose weight, that is 100% her choice, her body. That is not where my grievance lies. What I do have a problem with is these woman who tout themselves as plus size poster girls, saviour of the fashion challenged fatties who insist on constantly yo-yoing their opinions. You see it’s not even their fluctuating weight I have a problem with. Claire Richards has quite obviously lost a lot of weight since she started her range for Fashion World which is fair enough, her body, her choice, but what Claire hasn’t done (to my knowledge) is publicly declare her old fat body as disgusting/gross/whatever. Whereas her of the perma-tan constantly switches opinion of herself and her body and publicly vocalises that more often than I change my big fat XXXXL knickers.
What Gemma has to realise is that every time she calls her size 22 body disgusting, she calls every other woman of that size or larger, disgusting. And to those who aren’t as confident this could be a massive blow to their self esteem and self image.
The sad reality is, Gemma was offered a probably obscene amount of money to pick out some hideous prints and put them on hideous dresses to sell to people who like the Essex kinda look. She took that money of course, who wouldn’t? What she has failed to take into consideration is that the plus size market is an emotionally driven one, there is no way of getting round that. And the minute you renounce your fatness in such a scathing way, you insult pretty much half the nation. Well Miss Collins, I suggest you piss off back to Essex, take your diet pills, make your DVD and I hope for our sake you keep the weight off because I don’t want a blathering idiot like you representing our community.

Agree 110% with you, I won't buy anything from Gemma Collins' range on principle (apart from the fact I don't like it) as she is so hypocritical, happy to earn money from the plus sized market but at the same time saying how much she hates her body, dressing up in hideous joggers to go 'power walking' and allowing herself to be a subject of ridicule due to her weight…. etc etc etc etc.

I could not agree with you more!!! Some of us were recently speaking about just this! These plus size celebs who are "happy about their weight and shape" and then all of a sudden get a deal with some company like Weight Watchers or Jenny Craig alongside a DVD fitness deal all to be promoted in time for the post Christmas season and pushed at those slimming down for their new years resolutions. I hate that it boils down to marketing and money it should always be about health and fitness. I think if someone wants to lose weight then good on them but I resent being called disgusting at my size 22. I like to think I make the most of how I look and dress myself in a way that makes me look and feel good! I'm totally with you should needs to just piss off with her condescending drivel.

I totally agree with you. I have lost count of the amount of stories I have read where Gemma claims to love her "curves", and tells us of how unhappy she was when she was a size 14. Then she loses some weight and declares how much happier she is now blah blah blah! I hate the two faced nature of it and the constant flipping between one opinion or another. And with her clothing range and her fortune made off of the back of fat women, it is very upsetting to hear the negative comments she makes about her own body.
Claire Richards has fallen fowl to this too. She has posed naked in magazines saying how much she loves her size 16 body and will not diet again, only to appear in the magazines a month later saying how much she loves being a size 10 and would never want to be "fat" again! She has made her money by losing and gaining weight and selling her story of doing so. Before Steps reunited Claire did a programme about her yo yo dieting and her food addiction. In this programme she claimed once again to have beaten her demons and would not be indulging in dieting / weight gain again, but inevitably has continued to do the opposite!
The only celebrity that has refused to hate and criticise her "fat" body is Dawn French. Her attitude towards her bigger body once she had lost weight was very refreshing to see, and she isn't even trying to sell products to us plus size women!

In my humble, I also think Claire Richards is a hypocrite (I am no fan of Gemma Collins). I have no interest in all these so called reality TV 'stars'. One minute, they are 'learning to live with the fact that they will never be thin', then the next time you hear from them (usually when they have been on Big Brother, Big Reunion etc therefore getting a big cheque), they 'want to lose the weight', 'don't want to be unhealthy' and want to lose the weight AND SURPRISE, SURPRISE, they get paid for being the spokesperson for some weight-loss company.

I love you for this post B! I was disgusted at the Heat cover she was on. I've never liked this woman being a voice for the PS community she certainly doesn't speak for me. The irony that she 'designs' for a very well known plus size brand makes me shudder and the sooner she is dropped from it the better!!
